JLL South Africa release their Activity Based Workplace research paper and embrace this way of working in their new offices

Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) South Africa has made a bold statement in opting to embrace the Activity Based Working (ABW) concept in their new offices at The Firs, Rosebank.

​Many global corporates are implementing and realising the tremendous benefits of this new way of working (ABW) to accommodate different generations in the office environment. Decades ago, the workplace accommodated the Traditionalists and Baby Boomers, who required larger and enclosed offices. The office environment then became predominantly open plan to accommodate Generation X workers. Moving forward, it is important to also acknowledge the arrival of the new tech-savvy generation, born during the advent of technology; flexible and not confined by the 8 hour work day. Research has found that ABW balances the office environment for different generational gaps.

Ndibu Motaung, Head of Research, says "Our research paper shows that corporates have made great strides in transitioning from large, traditional offices to open plan settings to accommodate a larger workforce and increase efficiencies; however, more is needed to accommodate the needs of the new generation of workers by creating efficient and appropriate work environments that will unlock worker productivity and optimise portfolios."

Key JLL offices around the world, such as Sydney, Singapore, Stockholm and London, have already made the switch to ABW with resounding success. JLL South Africa wanted a design that was fresh and innovative, encouraging creativity and collaboration and most importantly, embracing this new approach to the workspace.

The firm tapped Head Interiors to create and execute this pioneering vision, which is a first for South Africa.

“The way we work today has changed,” said Craig Hean, Country Head of JLL.  “This is a departure from traditional thinking wherein we work at our desks all day long.  Instead, we are encouraged to move around the various work stations as the need arises, to confer with our colleagues, collaborate and be creative.  It makes us a more responsive and more productive workforce, as well as a happier one.”

Emma Luyt, project manager for Head Interiors, explains, “The challenge was to create a work environment that didn’t merely pay lip-service to this more fluid and mobile approach to working, but to actually effect this change through design.  We created different zones for different tasks designated by colour, which breaks the monotony of the traditional bland office and brings energy into the workspace.  Thus, there are meeting zones, quiet zones, active zones, private areas, a library, breakaway areas, meeting booths and project collaboration areas."
