From zero to hero in two short years
Unpacking the fast track success of Tétris, JLL’s design and build arm, on the occasion of its 2nd anniversary in business.
Tétris has gone from a start-up enterprise in October 2014 to a leading provider of design, fit-out and refurbishment services – in just two years.
How did it happen?
It was in 2014 that JLL South Africa was exploring the possibilities of establishing a design and build business to complement its existing service range. The strategy supported the company’s global approach to offer real estate occupiers and landlords an integrated solution that includes space planning, interior design and fit-out services.
Instead of acquiring an established company, JLL’s decision was to grow the design side organically through a new business offering. Emma Luyt, Managing Director of Tétris South Africa, had been involved in the transformation of JLL’s Johannesburg headquarters through Head Interiors and was approached to establish and start up the new business line.
Big business for a small team
The team of three rose to the challenge and opened shop in October 2014. By December 2014, the first transaction was signed for a 1,500m2 turnkey project for a global research company based in Johannesburg. It was a project that initiated the trajectory that has propelled Tétris’ record growth and client demand over the past two years. We are now a dynamic team of 25 permanent designers, consultants and construction managers with a portfolio of inspirational spaces for a broad range of commercial, hospitality, retail and residential clients.
As a fully integrated JLL business, we are a global interior design and build firm and our network with an international real estate company gives the business credibility when pitching for blue chip business and allows for the delivery of a complete service solution, far broader than the average fit-out contract. It also ensures a high standard of compliance and governance is brought to every project. There are now 29 Tétris offices across the globe.
Strong client relationships
Tétris works in close partnership with clients and it is this relationship that defines the company’scompetitive advantage. When you are working with big budgets, trust is critical.
Tétris prides itself of the strength of its team and has developed a reputation for delivering innovative, agile, sustainable work spaces through creative flair and technical expertise. The young team has an innate understanding of integrating technology with design to meet the expectations of the millennial generation.
Where to from here?
Tétris South Africa has made its mark on the commercial design space. Going forward, retail and hospitality have been identified as positive areas of growth, along with the potential to expand geographically to match JLL’s Sub-Saharan Africa footprint.
