Just a few years ago, retail was one of the key investment sub-sectors in real estate both globally and within South Africa (SA). There is little doubt that retail sales will remain under pressure over the short term as household consumption expenditure slows down in the midst of low growth, job losses and increasing household debt. Nonetheless, some retail formats are showing resilience with trading densities increasing and vacancy rates on a downward trend.
